Roswell Rotary Steps Up to Help Older Adults Age Well

Fourteen months ago I honestly did not even know what Rotary was! Now I am a proud member of Roswell Rotary, a group of wonderful people that literally live the Rotary mantra of “service above self.”

A great example of just that took place last week. I serve on the senior committee at Rotary and we orchestrated a senior education session which took place on March 22nd. The event was focused on providing older adults with information on the many resources available to people as they age. There really are a lot and the space continues to grow…think senior move specialists…tech training for seniors, etc. Interestingly, however, many seniors are unaware of what’s out there.

So why is this quickly growing business sector largely unknown to many seniors? Simple…no one wants to admit they need help. Losing one’s independence is a very hard “pill” to swallow and engaging senior resources (to many folks) means the beginning of the end. Truth is, a little advance planning can change one’s aging forecast significantly and make the inevitable much more palatable overall. As my good friend and our Care Coordinator #Lynn Ross told me, there are two kinds of planning in the senior space. Advance and crisis. We hope to get as many families as possible to be in the advance category. Advance planning means choices. Crisis planning, not-so-much!

We had an all-star cast at the event last week and I was humbled to act as master of ceremonies. The Roswell Rotary Senior committee was great pulling it all together and thanks to the 14 senor care professionals that gave their time to help educate a large group of  older adults. Sectors represented included (but were not limited to):

  • Senior living options
  • Hospice
  • Home care
  • Eldercare law
  • Long term care insurance
  • Community resources and support groups
  • Day-to-day money management
  • Occupational therapy
  • Alternatives to traditional healthcare
  • Senior-focused moving services/downsizing

Happy learning!

Caring Companions of Atlanta ~ The Turkey Dance ~

Everything Turkey
Everything Turkey

Funny…somehow all of us at Caring Companions of Atlanta always thought America cornered the market in everything turkey. I mean Thanksgiving is uniquely American and, now that I think if it, I don’t think I ate turkey once while living in Europe for two years. Where were all the turkeys!? Well, as we all take “five” and enjoy family and friends this Thanksgiving, I wanted to share something uniquely Spanish.

I saw my first authentic Flamenco Dance performance in Barcelona, Spain in 2001 while on honeymoon with my lovely bride. We made a night of it…dinner, the performance and then a scavenger-hunt of a trip back to our hotel (the performance ended so late, there were no transportation options to get back to our hotel!). We ended up walking close to six kilometers (they don’t use miles in the EU) and nearly saw the sun come up by the time we hit the pillow.

Now, back to the turkey…it appears as though all the turkeys, at least in Spain, partake in vocations other than holiday fare. Case in point, I enlighten you with the grand turkey Isabela. I wish she’d been part of the show we saw in 2001, but alas, we had to settle for homo sapien dancers. I will leave you with her performance to enjoy. More importantly, however, enjoy your family this Thanksgiving holiday. Dinners are a dime a dozen…family is sacred and unique to each of us. Embrace your cherished loved ones and tolerate those that bring jello molds or chew with their mouths open. And rather than taking that post-dinner walk, how about doing a turkey dance?

Happy Halloween ~ Caring Companions Of Atlanta

Hi everyone…

Mini Candies
Mini Candies

So I got to work this morning and it appears as though a candy goblin infiltrated Caring Companions. All of the mini candies we use to fill jars magically transformed into full-sized bars! See one picture taken last night on the 30th and a second this morning on Halloween! Go figure. So, those lucky folks that have been liking our Facebook page and inviting us into their places of business will get a little extra sugar this week!

Full Sized Candy

Now, a rumor is circulating that we are in cahoots with the American Dental Associations. Let me put that to rest…while we might be making it “rain” at dental practices across Atlanta, we have no formal arrangement. No, we are not colluding and there is NO Russian connection either! However, we are spreading goodwill and sweetness around because we so love being a part of the community.

Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween!

So Happy Halloween to all of the friends of Caring Companions of Atlanta…we take caring for people very seriously and are truly thankful for the opportunity to do so. And, all those folks across Atlanta we sugar up weekly are a critical part of making us successful!

Adam

Meet Corny Carl – Caring Companions of Atlanta

Caring Companions of Atlanta does post information for our friends and clients about caring for folks that need a little extra help. However, a big part of our approach to care (and life) includes a healthy dose of fun! We live each day with optimism, and the belief that doing the right thing should not be an isolated occurrence…in fact, it should be a part of everything we do in caring for our clients, their families and our people.

"Corny Carl"
“Corny Carl”

Now, back to fun. Meet Corny Carl. Mr. Corny has a propensity to employ alliteration. He is single and a sweet catch for some lovely young pumpkin. He likes long rolls in the country and sitting on steps in front of homes…especially in the fall. Presently, Mr. Corny is competing in Brookdale Senior Living’s Halloween pumpkin decorating contest. He currently resides at Brookdale Chambrel, should you want to meet him.

Corny Carl was dropped off at Brookdale yesterday and clearly is contemplating the caliber of competitor carving curators with Kasey. Carl is a bit of a celebrity of late due to his preponderance of candy corn. And, everything decorating Carl is edible…candy, in fact. Some sweet decorating as only the Caring Companion Candy Crusaders can come up with.

The blue ribbon is sure to be his as will the first prize…a trip for two to Tahiti complete with private jet transport and a super-yacht. Well, not really…but a little recognition from the fine residents at Brookdale would suit us just fine!

Happy Halloween everyone…be safe, enjoy some treats and beware of goblins. Corny Carl clearly has his eyes open!!!!

Now, if you like our page on Facebook, you could be visited by the Caring Companions Candy Crusaders…we spread sweets and thrill dentist’s across metro Atlanta!

The Caring Companions of Atlanta Candy Man has been out and about!

"Something's Bugging Me”
“Something’s Bugging Me”

The Caring Companions of Atlanta Candy Man has been out and about spreading sweets to those in the business of helping our older adults.

Evidence in point?

See two of my friends below from Brookdale Chambrel who proudly displayed their jars for all to see! Kasey and Kate are lovely folks and work hard to better the lives of those wise folks among us.

Now, amid the excitement of filling jars, I learned that Brookdale Chambrel will be playing host once again to a pumpkin contest. Needless to say, the Candy Man and Caring Companions will be happy to participate.

Last year’s entry entitled “Something’s Bugging Me?” (see picture) failed to with the blue ribbon but we have sweet plans for this year’s submission. I heard through the grapevine the winning Cucurbita pepo (that’s a fancy word term for pumpkin) will get a platinum Rolex…and guess what?! I know what time it is!

By the way, like us on Facebook, share our posts and you too could be visited by the Candy Man!….Adam

What Our Clients Say

Wonderful Care! ★★★★★ 5 out of 5 – by Laura S. on Aug 14, 2017

My parents recently relocated to Atlanta to be closer to family. My father has Alzheimer’s disease requiring assistance with all activities of daily living. My mother’s goal has been to care for him at home and Caring Companions has made this goal a reality. The caregivers who assist my parents were selected with care to be a good “fit.” They are even better than I had hoped for. Both of my parents look forward to seeing them because they are so kind and respectful. They go above and beyond to support my family. I could not be more pleased with the caregivers and Adam Seever! Caring companions has truly exceeded my expectations!
