There are things that people take for granted because they are able to do it daily without much thought. And yet, even the simplest act can completely change a person’s day.
Racing around to start the day; getting to work on time and dropping off the kids at school. Hitting traffic and drumming the steering wheel anxiously while watching the clock and hoping the light will hurry up and turn green. Then, walking into the office to deal with work drama and timelines in an effort to get to the end of the day when it’s time to race home to the family and evening activities before getting to bed.
Still, for many, the day is still, quiet, and uneventful though not always by choice. And for these people, even a simple task like bathing or taking a brush to their hair can be a hope rather than a given. For so many seniors bound at home, care could be a luxury.
Consider how even the most basic human functions can bring joy to a senior who may be unable to do these things for themselves. And these could be simple tasks such as:
Brushing their hair. The simple strokes of a hairbrush as it glides through someone’s hair can help that respective senior to feel pretty or handsome. For many people, the memory of their mother brushing their hair had brought pleasant images. Imagine that when a senior can’t do it for him or herself any longer, how, to have that task shared with them, may bring happiness which may otherwise be sorely lacking.
Getting a new comfortable pair of sweatclothes or house dress. For many seniors, home care includes wearing safe clothing. However, this doesn’t preclude getting a fresh, new item. Again, it’s easy to take for granted running to the store and getting a shirt or pair of pants and finding the task to be more of a chore than enjoyable. But for a home bound senior, the idea of shopping for a new pair of sweats or house dress may be like a gift.
A dab of makeup can make all the difference. Many women can think back to times when they were young girls and watched their mothers and grandmothers making up their faces. For so many young women, they couldn’t wait until it was their time! For some senior women, they aren’t able to do such tasks any longer. It is nice for some of these senior women to have that memory realized. The reflection staring back at them in the mirror after having a nice layer of makeup applied can bring joy to their hearts!
A good shave, too. For senior men, most don’t touch a shaver for home care and safety reasons. Many senior men rest with the stubble on their faces without much thought about it after awhile. For many, there simply aren’t a lot of methods to remedy the situation. So a great way to brighten a senior man’s day is to provide a nice, clean shave. A little dignity can go a long way for a happy day!
So consider taking a few minutes out of the hustled life to change the day of a senior.
