Do You Have a Plan C?

A Plan C? What on earth is a plan C?

If you are a family caregiver, you (intentionally or not) have a plan. It might be that you are the sole caregiver to your loved one. It might be that you have partnered with a home care company that is plan A and you are plan B.  Regardless, having a back-up plan is extremely important you are the caregiver to someone living with a chronic condition.

As a home care company, we talk with families regarding their immediate needs and what their goals are in seeking care. This often includes planning for change as one ages or lives with a condition. If we do become their care partner, we are usually considered plan A.

We embrace being plan A and do everything in our power to fulfill that role. We hire the best of the best caregivers and train the one-on-one. W make live intros and have on-call should a family’s caregiver be unavailable due to illness or other of life’s eventualities. However, even as a professional home care company, hard as we try, always fulfilling as plan A can be impossible. And that represents a HUGE problem if a family has no pan B.

Lynn Ross, LMSW

As mentioned in the beginning of this piece, most of our partner families serve as plan B should plan A fall through. But plan B is even more than just fill in. It needs to account for, and include the location of critical documents (legal and medical) that pertain to the care partner and their loved one. Why? What if a family has to go to plan C?

Enter COVID-19. So, the Johnson family has a homecare company as plan A. Mable Johnson (caring for Charlie Johnson) is plan B and she knows the whereabouts of his advance directives, will and powers of attorney, etc. But what happens in the case of a virus like Corona? What is Mable gets Corona virus and, as a result, the Johnson’s need to go into lock-down. No caregiver can come for fear of contracting the virus. Their prior caregiver also has to go into quarantine for two weeks on their end too. And even worse, what if Charlie’s needs surpass what Mable can do? Or if, God forbid, Mable ends up in the hospital? Who cares for Charlie then?

This might seem extreme…and perhaps it is. However, the risk is real. Having multiple plans to tackle eventualities is of dire importance. Life or death importance.

So, what is Plan C? Is it a caring neighbor that might step in? A distant family member that can drop everything and fly in to stay with Charlie? If so, does plan C know they are in cue to help? Do they know where all the critical documentation is? Who Charlie’s physicians are? Are they authorized to carryout care legally? And what are these documents? They include (but are not limited to):

  • Birth certificate
  • Advance Directives for Healthcare
  • Power of Attorney for Finances
  • Estate plans
  • Property deeds
  • Will
  • Life insurance
  • Final arrangements (burial policies, funeral wishes, cremation, etc.)
  • Tax documents

In addition, many of the above are stored in banks and have passwords, etc. Where are the documents and what are all the passwords? What about passwords for your computers, hand held devices, etc.?

Compiling all these papers sounds like a daunting task, and if you haven’t organized them over the years, it may be. Since it’s tax time, you may be more organized than you realize. With social distancing required, you should have plenty of time now to get this done. Your family will ever be grateful that you loved them enough to make it easier to carry out your wishes and continue caring for your loved one. Organizing your “important papers” and telling others their location is a major part of Plan C.

If you need help figuring out who to call to consult on getting all this done, Call us. We are here to help…if we are not the   answer, we will redirect you to someone who can help.

Stay healthy!

Happy Holidays Everyone

Home-Care-in-Atlanta-GAEarlier this week I was riding down in an elevator at a doctor’s office thinking about how I wanted a new car. Mine just turned 18 years-old and my “wheels” have become a source good natured entertainment to many of my friends (not to mention my kids!). As I pondered if my next chariot might be an Infiniti or Honda, an elderly couple made their way on to the elevator…one clearly living with a movement disorder. We exchanged pleasantries and rode down.

As I approached my car in the garage, I stopped at my trunk and had a moment. I felt silly for worrying about a car when I had my health. Sure, a car is nice to have…especially in Atlanta…but too often I get side-tracked by things that seem important but in truth are a detail.

As we approach the holidays remember that family, friends and our health and the greatest gifts we can ever receive. For many, these gifts are elusive.

I also hope you will enjoy The Piano Guys in action…and to think I though there was only one was to play the piano! Angels We Have Heard

Happy Holidays from your friends at Caring Companions of Atlanta

That Fancy Commode Made Quite a Splash!

Aloha!

The past couple of years I have had the privilege of being asked to participate in Aloha to Aging’s annual fund raiser. Dawn Reed, the Executive Director there has worked hard for the past 9 years to have a positive affect on older adults via their Adult Day and a long list of wonderful programs.

Great Crowd!

This past Saturday night, Aloha honored Dr. Betty Siegel (past president of Kennesaw State University) at the Gala which featured a silent auction, drinks and appetizers, a lovely sit-down meals and a live auction that included African Safaris, trips to Italy and even a three thousand dollar commode! A sincere thanks to Duravit USA and Tim Schroeder for donating the potty. It made quite a splash (was that a pun?!) and was absolutely a highlight of the auction (I have never heard such a murmur when it came up on the screen!).

The Commode

There were many notable guests (not the least of which was ME!) including Senator Johnny Isakson and Betty’s husband Joel. Numerous speeches honor Betty and it was a special night.

Dawn, thanks for letting me be a part of the event and keep doing all the good you do. I was even pleased to win an item in the silent auction (as if I know how to use a palm-nailer?!).

As Dawn says Aloha!

Happy Holidays

Home Care in Atlanta GA

The older I get the more I realize the Holidays are more about memories (new and old) than anything else. We all have our family traditions that define how we celebrate. I remember my brotherHome-Care-in-Atlanta-GA and I living in Philadelphia as a children. Christmas morning featured a blur of lights, cats getting into wrapping paper and my mom and dad happily soaking it all in…grandparents too occasionally.

We moved to Chicago in the late ’60’s and for years we had a tradition of making Mexican food for Christmas Eve?! No sure where that came from! In 1979 Chicago got 29″ of snow just after Christmas and I recall vacant busses and cars littering the streets and many, many snow days!

Now I have my own family. My mom has moved on but my dad and step mom still make an annual pilgrimage to Atlanta for the Holidays. The cheer of the holidays never fades but the glow of the memories is what really is etched into my mind.

So, whatever your belief or traditions…happy holidays to you and “yours.” And, for the record…as the picture proves…I have been to the North Pole and DO know the big guy!

What Our Clients Say

Wonderful Care! ★★★★★ 5 out of 5 – by Laura S. on Aug 14, 2017

My parents recently relocated to Atlanta to be closer to family. My father has Alzheimer’s disease requiring assistance with all activities of daily living. My mother’s goal has been to care for him at home and Caring Companions has made this goal a reality. The caregivers who assist my parents were selected with care to be a good “fit.” They are even better than I had hoped for. Both of my parents look forward to seeing them because they are so kind and respectful. They go above and beyond to support my family. I could not be more pleased with the caregivers and Adam Seever! Caring companions has truly exceeded my expectations!
