There are always going to be bad days or days that aren’t so great as a caregiver. But when those days are outnumbering the good days, you might be starting to get worn down by caregiving and it’s time to take a closer look.
Listen to What Your Body Is Telling You
Your body often “knows” what’s going on long before your brain is ready to acknowledge it. If you can slow down for even a moment and pay attention to what your body is telling you, you can learn quite a bit. You might find that you’re not eating right, that you need more sleep, or that more movement in your day is what you need. Regardless, your needs aren’t being met and you need to change that.
Don’t Make Promises You Can’t Keep
When you’re a caregiver, you want to help. You might even start to spread yourself way too thin in order to help your loved one and other people in your life. You can’t keep going that way, however. It’s time to step back for a bit and only make promises that you can actually keep.
Look for Options to Help You
You have so many more options for help than you likely realize as a family caregiver. There are local and government agencies that can help and you may have more help than you realize from your other family members. Another option is to hire elderly care providers. This is an especially powerful option because these folks have experience in the same issues you deal with every day.
Evaluate Where You Are on Your Caregiver Journey
Depending on how long you’ve been a caregiver and how much support you have, you may or may not be able to continue on your caregiving journey the way that you are. You may be at point at which you need to hand the reins over to someone else even. No matter what, it’s important to be honest with yourself about where you are and what you need.
By keeping in touch with what is going on with you, you can ensure that your loved one is getting exactly the care that she needs.
