Happy Friday! One of the topics that is often discussed with families seeking home care is acceptance. Most older adults really don’t want to address a loss of independence. Seeking home care is an admission…an admission he or she can no longer do everything for themselves. Getting old is not fun!
Daily Caring has an article I wanted to share below. Keep in mind that every situation is different. What might work for one won’t for another. Example: the article references an approach that uses a “little white lie” that the care if free. This might work just fine with a senior with a cognitive impairment. However, a person with a razor sharp intellect might regard this as condescending.
Another approach suggested involves starting a caregiver at only a couple hours a week. A great idea, but in reality, very few (if any) caregivers would be willing to work a schedule like that. They need to feed their family! A two-hour work week wont put food on the table.
At the end of the day, the most important thing we can help an older adult with is keeping them safe. Home care can go a long way to accomplishing that. How to gain acceptance can be different for many. One technique we have used successfully many times is billing the caregiver as an “assistant.” Someone that can handle some details and make life easier.
If you are dealing with a family or loved one in resistance, feel free to give us a call…we are always happy to help and have a team of people wit experience in breaking down barriers. Have a great weekend!
