Caring for Others vs. Caring for Family

A one of the owners of Caring Companions of Atlanta, I have amassed a wealth of experience finding and integrating care into client’s homes. While it can be intimidating, following a specific process, usually yields a positive outcome (see this link to see out process named Anatomy of Great Care below)

Anatomy of Great Care

Presently, however, I find myself in relatively unchartered territory. In August, my 90-year-old father is slated to be in town for a couple weeks while my stepmom orchestrates a move of sorts in Chicago. The townhouse they have in Chicago was devastated but a plumbing leak last year and, due to COVID and a variety of other things, the renovation has been lengthy. However, the time is finally coming to move back in. Fortunately, they have a small hobby farm only 90 minutes from Chicago and set up shop there while all the work took place.

Thirteen years ago, I did help orchestrate care for my mom while she battled Leukemia. However, it was a little different because my cousin was more on the ground than I was. My cousin lived in the same city while I was bouncing back and forth between my home in Atlanta and Arizona.

My dad had heart surgery in May and has been slower than expected to bounce back than anyone would have hoped. He is, indeed, better, but what was not accounted for when the surgery was planned were his past two years of health issues. He had a nasty car accident and a myriad of complications following that. All said, he had 24-months of atrophy and being largely sedate. As a result, much of his strength evaporated.

So, while the valve replacement surgery was nothing short of a miracle and he is improving, it has been as a snail’s pace.

We are excited to have him be here to say the least. He is a one of those people that is so easy to have around. He has his own agendas and coexists so efficiently. It is almost as if he is not even there aside from meals and chats. However, his care needs have increased significantly, and I find myself feeling somewhat intimidated to be a family caregiver during his visit. This is complicated by the common tendency for elders not to want to burden. He does not want to admit his needs…and as such it is hard to know what to do and when.

I wanted to acknowledge this for all the family caregivers out there. Care for a loved one, while a pursuit of passion and love, has its own challenges. Sure, our team orchestrates care for many people with a variety of conditions. However, when the care resides closer to home, a new set of emotional and physical challenges emerge.

I know we will love his company when he is here and miss him dramatically when he leaves. In the meantime, I admittedly feel some apprehension of what lies ahead.

An Ounce of Prevention…

Hey friends!

We talk a lot in the older adult business about “resistance” and not wanting to admit one is losing their independence. We get it…look for a post specific to why older adults resist in a week or two. That being said, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure (or a ton…or mega-ton!).

The thing is, a fall for a senior can spell disaster. It is one of the top three reasons older adults end up in the hospital. Fifty percent of people that break a hip over the age of 65 never end up back home. Mom…dad, ponder that.

My father asked me what I wanted for Christmas this past holiday season and my “ask” was that he see his doctor to get assessed for his fall risk. Get with a physical therapist to make sure he is exercising to lessen the likelihood of a fall and engage an occupational therapist to evaluate hi physical surroundings.

Class Helps Prevent Falls Among Seniors

I came across an article in the New York Times the other day that merits a share. It shares how seniors in the Netherlands are getting educated on how to deal with declining mobility issues and fall safely. The link is below:

NYT Article On Fall Classes in the Netherlands

I am happy to say that Santa delivered my holiday wish and I feel better about my dad living on his farm in SW Michigan.  My dad was a swimmer in his younger days (one year swam 365 miles at his health club!), and an avid camper and paddler. We took many float trips for days down rivers in the Ozarks camping along the way. I am not sure week-long canoe trips are in the cards with him in the near future, but at least I know he has done his part to be as safe as possible at home.

Happy reading friends!

It’s All About Us!

Caregiver in Atlanta GACaregiver-in-Atlanta-GA

It’s not, of course, but we are confident enough in our service to our client base and hospitable care of our caregivers to toot our own “horn!”

When we started Caring Companions of Atlanta, we set forth to operate on one very simple foundation. Just do the right thing. Many of you have seenCaregiver-in-Atlanta-GA that line on mugs we occasionally share with folks, on candy jars we leave behind and fill (“the Candy Man can!”) and on printed materials we distribute. Our belief is that if we “just do the right thing” at each and every turn, the rest will take care of itself. Our clients will be very satisfied, our caregivers will love working with us and we will be profitable. So far, so good!

So, at the risk of being presumptuous today it is all about us! If you would, please:

  • Like us on Facebook!
  • Tell us if you believe we do a good job!

And by all means, do not keep us a secret!

Have a terrific (and safe) week!

Adam

Company News

We LOVE our caregivers! Caring Companions of Atlanta is proud to name our Caregiver Champions for the first quarter!

Of course, we love our clients too! But we would be nothing without the services of our caregivers. And we embrace that by cherishing the amazing work they do and them as professionals…and people.

Before we started Caring Companions I decided to become a certified nurse’s aide myself. My thinking was “how can I really understand their world if I do not know what they go through”? It was a good move and has given me an appreciation for their heart and commitment to people in need.

So, we love our caregivers. We ask a lot of them, but we also try to let them know how much we appreciate them. To that end, I want to congratulate Parbati Caregiver-in-Atlanta-GAand Germany as this quarter’s caregiver champions. Both service a wonderful woman named Ms. Margie and have been “adopted” as part of her family. They help Ms. Margie with her life and, in return, benefit from a wealth of wisdom and pith. Along with the honor of Champions, the caregivers get a sweet treat and gift card to us however they see fit.

Thanks Germany and Partbati for being a part of the team. We truly do think the work you do is important and value your contributions each and every day.

What Our Clients Say

Wonderful Care! ★★★★★ 5 out of 5 – by Laura S. on Aug 14, 2017

My parents recently relocated to Atlanta to be closer to family. My father has Alzheimer’s disease requiring assistance with all activities of daily living. My mother’s goal has been to care for him at home and Caring Companions has made this goal a reality. The caregivers who assist my parents were selected with care to be a good “fit.” They are even better than I had hoped for. Both of my parents look forward to seeing them because they are so kind and respectful. They go above and beyond to support my family. I could not be more pleased with the caregivers and Adam Seever! Caring companions has truly exceeded my expectations!
