Happy Memorial Day from Caring Companions of Atlanta

Home Care in Atlanta GA: Happy Memorial Day from Caring Companions of Atlanta

Regardless of where a person sits on the political spectrum, one undeniable truth is the sacrifice our veterans have made to ensure America is the country we enjoy. So, as we memorialize our veterans this holiday weekend, remember:

It is the Veteran, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the Veteran, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the Veteran, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the Veteran, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble.
It is the Veteran, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the Veteran, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote.
It is the Veteran, who salutes the Flag,
It is the Veteran, who serves under the Flag,
To be buried by the flag,
So the protester can burn the flag.

Have a safe a wonderful Memorial Day friends. Adam

Congratulations Lynn Ross!

Home Care in Atlanta GA: Congratulations Lynn Ross!

Every once in a while, you meet someone truly special. Lynn Ross is one of those people. When we met her we could tell instantly she was different. Her genuineness and passion patient-centered care were inspiring. During our first meeting, we spoke mostly of volunteerism and the need for older adults to keep active.

This past Saturday Caring Companions of Atlanta attended the American Parkinson’s Disease Association’s monthly Educational meeting in Decatur. Lynn was the featured speaker for a session entitled “Ask the Social Worker.” Lynn spent about an hour answering questions about care solutions, problems and resources. Ironically, just the day before, Lynn retired. A scant 12 hours later, and Lynn was back to helping people!

So, today, we share a heartfelt congratulations to Lynn Ross…who retired last Friday and came out of retirement the very next day!

Revisiting Resistance: Adding Dementia

Home-Care-in-Atlanta-GA
Home Care in Atlanta GA: Revisiting Resistance: Adding Dementia

We have posted in prior BLOG entries some of the challenges of resistance as people age. It is a natural reaction to be resistant…it represents one losing some of their independence.

While it might seem obvious to someone looking in from outside, to the older adult we want to help, things are not always clear…and that lack of clarity is aggravated by fear of a changing environment. Ironically, once a transition is made, the person resisting often feels great relief.

A loss of independence is tough enough in a normal aging situation…add the complexity of a loved one suffering from a form of dementia and the conversation really gets muddled. Anxiety, guilt, fear of being taken advantage of…many emotions come into play. How should one wade through all this?

We came across this video in Daily Caring and wanted to share it. It discussed how to break down resistance when it is coming from someone suffering from dementia. It is roughly thirty minutes but worth every second if you have a loved one transitioning. Teepa Snow is considered by many to be the expert in working with people with dementia. She has an amazing way of helping us understand what a sufferer goes through and offers some practical tips on how the subject can be addressed.

Caring Companions of Atlanta had the pleasure of visiting the Marietta Cobb County Senior Services facility to see an expo on assistive devices. We also toured their assistive devices lab which had a myriad of really neat thing to help people with limitations. A couple of highlights included a spoon that compensates for tremors, making it easier for patients to eat with dignity and alarm clocks complete with pill cases attached to help with medication reminders. All in all a really nice event. Thanks for having us!

EARL NEEDS HELP!

Home Care in Atlanta GA

EARL NEEDS HELP! PLEASE DONATE HERE:Home-Care-in-Atlanta-GA
https://www.youcaring.com/earl-750371

I first met Pam, who is the Executive Director of Caring Together in Hope, at Amy’s Place memory care cafe about 18 months ago. She had a trusty side-kick named Earl. Earl is a dachshund (AKA wiener dog!) who’s enormous personality defies his small stature. I’d visit from time to time and quickly realized that, although Pam is an extraordinary caregiver, it is Earl that shoulders much of the burden of comforting families in need. His little face and endlessly wagging tail brings smiles to everyone that visits Amy’s place.

During my last couple visits, I noticed a change in Earl and learned he he was suffering from a genetic back problem…one that can only be corrected through surgery. If fact, this once lively and happy little pup was suffering from debilitating back pain! The pint-sized caregiver needs caregiving himself. Sadly, the cost of this is very high (about $5K!). So, we are off and running to help Earl. Please share this and donate to help Earl resume his caregiving duties. With the surgery, it is likely he will return to his old self and once again offer needed support to families battling dementia.

Please share a donate!!!!!

What Our Clients Say

Wonderful Care! ★★★★★ 5 out of 5 – by Laura S. on Aug 14, 2017

My parents recently relocated to Atlanta to be closer to family. My father has Alzheimer’s disease requiring assistance with all activities of daily living. My mother’s goal has been to care for him at home and Caring Companions has made this goal a reality. The caregivers who assist my parents were selected with care to be a good “fit.” They are even better than I had hoped for. Both of my parents look forward to seeing them because they are so kind and respectful. They go above and beyond to support my family. I could not be more pleased with the caregivers and Adam Seever! Caring companions has truly exceeded my expectations!
